Suitcase of memories
A Suitcase of Memories is a tool developed by the Helsinki City Museum that can be borrowed by users such as seniors’ centres, senior citizens’ service centres, school classes and pre-school groups. The suitcase contains old objects and photos that can be used to spend time remembering the past.
The service is provided free of charge, and the borrower is responsible for picking up the suitcase and returning it. The borrowing time is 1–4 weeks.
There are currently nine suitcases available: Four life-cycle suitcases that contain everyday objects from different areas of life, as well as five theme suitcases:
-
a beauty suitcase, with objects related to beauty care, particularly from the 1950s
-
a childhood suitcase, which takes one on a nostalgic trip to the everyday life, fun and games of childhood in Helsinki
-
a school suitcase comprised of two parts: a pupil’s holdall and the teacher’s briefcase, with objects from different time periods
- a rainbow suitcase, that may evoke memories, especially among those who experienced their youth in the 1960s–80s and belong to sexual and/or gender minorities
-
a sports suitcase, from which one can find joy of exercise and photos from the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics
