Museum open for 24 hours
The Helsinki City Museum will open its newest museum in the market blocks on 13 May 2016. Entry to the new Helsinki City Museum located in the corner of Aleksanterinkatu and Katariinankatu is always free, and when the doors open on 13 May 2016, the entry is especially free as the museum will stay open 24 hours starting at 5 p.m. You are welcome to visit the new museum and exhibitions in the middle of the night if you like. Free entrance.
The first exhibitions of the museum cover broken hearts and your own Helsinki. The Museum of Broken Relationships exhibits anonymous donations of items and stories, telling about broken relationships. The exhibition features break-up items collected from Helsinki and elsewhere in the world. The Helsinki Bites exhibition, on the other hand, dives into the past of Helsinki, bringing up common memories about the city’s history.
Children’s Town is a favourite of preschoolers. Play in an 18th century shop, write on a blackboard at an elementary school desk and examine everyday artefacts in a Grandmother’s House from the 1970s. In the Time Machine in the basement of the museum, Signe Brander’s photographs from the fervently changing Helsinki from a hundred years back come alive with the help of new technology. You can also take a journey to the past in space, but also using virtual reality devices.
The new museum is celebrated around the clock
The preparations for the opening of the doors already start at 4 p.m. with carnival spirit, circus figures and balloons filling up Katariinankatu. A nostalgic open tram, The Bad Ass Brass Band and Marco Bjurström will also join in the festivities.
When the doors open on Friday, the citizens can visit the atmospheric museum for 24 hours and enjoy a varied programme. Muuan mies and Inginmaa/Röyhkä/Hypnomen will be in charge of music. You can spend the spring night looking at the exhibitions, have adventures in the museum or watch Night at the Museum films on CRT televisions. There’s also a special midnight tour through the museum.
At the break of dawn on Saturday, the most spirited ones can hurry to a retro-style morning exercise session. Traditional yard games and musical children’s programme will start on Saturday morning, led by Eppel&Peppel. The public can roam through the new museum, talk with historic citizens of Helsinki and participate in guided introduction tours during the day. The museum will be open until 5 p.m. on Saturday. Free entrance, welcome!
