Conservation

The management of the City Museum’s collections is aimed at preventative conservation. Objects are protected from light, dirt, pests as well as fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

The preservation of the historical information and cultural value borne by the objects is ensured by investigating and documenting each object’s material, structure, production methods and alterations. In actual conservation measures, the guiding principle is to do as little as possible and make it as unnoticeable as possible.

Conservators are involved in the planning, construction and disassembly of exhibitions. They also advise both local museums and private individuals on matters related to appropriate storage and conservation.

Object conservation

Object conservators mainly work with objects manufactured from hard materials such as metal, ceramics and glass, as well as plastic and rubber objects. They are also responsible for archaeological objects found in the field.

Furniture conservation

The furniture conservator is responsible for the conservation and preservation of furniture and other wooden objects. The work includes cleaning, structural repairs, glueing, supplementing missing pieces, and the restoration of surface treatment.

Paper conservation

The paper conservator is responsible for the conservation of paper-based museum objects. These include watercolour paintings, graphic art, photographs, printed products, sketches, maps, documents, books and packaging.

Building conservation

The building conservator provides consultation in the management and repair of old buildings and conducts on-site surveys. The building conservator also serves as an expert in renovation projects involving buildings of cultural and historical value.

Textile conservation

The textile conservator manages the City Museum’s extensive collection of textiles, including suits, shoes, headwear and household textiles. In exhibitions, the textile conservator is responsible not only for the conservation of textiles featured in the exhibition, but also their appropriate historical and stylistic presentation.
