Central Uusimaa Regional Museum

Helsinki City Museum also serves as the Central Uusimaa Regional Museum. We provide expert help and guidance in matters related to cultural heritage in an area that covers Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, Tuusula, Järvenpää, Kerava, Nurmijärvi, Hyvinkää and Mäntsälä. This task is based on the Museum Act (Museolaki) and the services are free-of-charge.

Working for the cultural environment in Central Uusimaa

In accordance with the Museum Act, the Central Uusimaa Regional Museum acts as an expert on cultural environments, especially built cultural environments and archaeological cultural heritage, issuing statements, participating in negotiations with the authorities in an expert role and providing guidance, as well as developing and promoting the preservation of cultural environments, cooperation in the field and the digital recording and accessibility of information on cultural environments.

In Espoo and Vantaa, city museums Espoo City Museum and Vantaa City Museum take care of preserving cultural environments in their area of operation as per the agreement.

The Finnish Heritage Agency, on the other hand, supervises the conservation and repair of buildings owned by the state, the university and the church (sites in accordance with the Church Act and protected churches built after 1917). The Finnish Heritage Agency is also responsible for the protection of buildings protected under the Act on the Protection of the Built Heritage.

Restoration subsidies

The built heritage renovation and restoration subsidies are issued by the Uusimaa ELY Centre and the Finnish Heritage Agency. The application period is in late autumn each year. The Central Uusimaa Regional Museum supervises the repairs of sites which have been granted subsidies.

The building researchers and conservators of the cultural environment team provide services related to the preservation of the cultural environment in the operating area of the Central Uusimaa Regional Museum.

Expert tasks related to archaeology

In terms of archaeological cultural heritage, the assignments of the provincial museum expand the operating field of the museum to municipalities in Central Uusimaa, with the exception of Espoo and Vantaa. Museum archaeologists work as experts of the archaeological cultural environment in Hyvinkää, Järvenpää, Kauniainen, Kerava, Mäntsälä, Nurmijärvi and Tuusula, in addition to Helsinki.

In keeping with our cultural environment tasks, we issue statements for planning and land use projects, participate in negotiations with authorities and provide guidance on matters related to archaeological cultural heritage for both authorities and residents in the area. Our tasks also include field visits and documentary work on sites, if necessary.

In addition to working with the authorities, our goals include increasing participation opportunities for residents and encouraging people to protect our cultural environment. We aim to expand the Adopt a Monument activities, which have been well-established in Helsinki, to central Uusimaa as well. Thanks to the operations, residents will have a chance to perform tangible maintenance tasks related to cultural environment.

We want to preserve the valuable, multi-layered past, develop cooperation within the field and promote the preservation of cultural environments in our operating area.

Regional museum work

The Regional Museum promotes cooperation between museums by organising training sessions, meetings and regional museum days each year. Regional cooperation is developed in cooperation with the Finnish Heritage Agency and other regional provincial museums.

The museum provides advice to municipalities, associations, foundations and companies in matters related to museum collections and recording traditions. The provincial museums will provide guidance if you have a museum and need help with

– cataloguing and maintaining collections
– museum administration, funding and subsidiaries
– museum and exhibition plans
– repairing museum buildings, etc.

Local museums can apply for project funding from the Finnish Heritage Agency, and the regional museum will participate in overseeing the use of the funds. The application period is in the autumn. You can find more information on funding on the Finnish Heritage Agency (in Finnish) website.

The Regional Museum will also provide advice on matters related to intangible cultural heritage. We encourage all communities to preserve the memories of their own past. This secures the survival of rich and versatile cultural heritage.
