Would you like to know what went on on Mäntymäki on spring evenings in the 1960s? Or which was the best restaurant in town for hook-ups for sexual minorities? Come and join a guided tour to the streets, homes, bars, parks and shrubbery of yesteryear Helsinki and discover the city from the queer point of view.
At 6 pm, the museum lobby will be taken over by Plastic Pony. The performance group, known for their colourful clothing, combine fashion, art and philosophy. The group started with a fashion show parody on the Espa Stage in 1991. The group went on to organise numerous performances and shows at various events in Helsinki and towards the end of the 1990s in London as well. The group’s activities have also included the clothing store Plastic Pony market, exhibitions and short films made in collaboration with the likes of Rosa Liksom. Plastic Pony has used carnival-esque costumes to question mundane norms and traditional borders between genders as well as strived to offer people building blocks for the construction of their identity.
This event, organised at Helsinki City Museum on the Night of the Arts will offer an opportunity to take a look at Plastic Pony’s work through videos and photographs accompanied by music in the spirit of the times and guided by living Pony characters.
