Helsinki – Europe’s finest art nouveau city
Come and explore the art nouveau architecture of Helsinki!
Helsinki does not pale in comparison to any of the art nouveau centres in Europe. Part of the charm in this city on the Baltic Sea comes from entire districts reflecting art nouveau style in their architecture. Every so often, you will encounter peculiar roof shapes, medieval-looking towers, facades of natural stone adorned by the most imaginative ornamental details, charming windows and doorways on the streets of Helsinki. Art nouveau was much more than just a joyous architectural style. It was an international breakthrough that brought new thinking to the world of architecture.
For summer 2019, Helsinki City Museum has produced a practical guide to the city’s architecture highlighting the most interesting milieus and pieces of art nouveau architecture in Helsinki. The art nouveau architecture guide, available in Finnish and English, can be bought at the museum gift shop.
You can learn more about art nouveau in Helsinki at an event organised by the Helsinki City Museum at 5 pm on Tuesday 27 August 2019.
