Sat 7 November, 7 p.m. A concert of Lauri Saikkola’s compositions Tickets can be bought for EUR 15/5 at the door one hour before the concert.
Lauri Saikkola (1906–1995) was a composer who has since been nearly forgotten. Saikkola started his career in Vyborg and acted as a violist for the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra from 1934 to 1965 and as a music producer for Yleisradio from 1953 to 1973. His production includes some twenty symphonies, three operas, and a great number of chamber and vocal music. The romantic-neoclassical music of Saikkola was performed a great deal, but after the style went out of fashion, he stopped composing and gradually retired from the world. The concert will feature Saikkola’s chamber music for different ensembles, played by Erkki Palola (violin and viola), Samuli Peltonen (cello), Mikko Raasakka (clarinet) and Risto-Matti Marin and Timo Latonen, piano.
Sun 8 November at 2 p.m. Metropolia November: Antti Lähdesmäki Quartet Free entry.
The compositions of Antti Lähdesmäki Quartet are based on modern European jazz music, combining elements from classical music with traditional American jazz through free. The result is a nostalgic trip through the history of music as echoes of new, original music. The Quartet consists of Juho Valjakka (flute, alto flute), Antti Lähdesmäki (piano, compositions), Juuso Rinta (contrabass) and Teemu Mustonen (drums).
Sun 15 November at 2 p.m. Metropolia November: Classical-romantic afternoon Free entry.
The third concert in Metropolia November presents classical and romantic string trios and solo pieces by, for instance, Ludwig van Beethoven and Antonín Dvořák.
Sun 22 November at 2 p.m. Metropolia November: Emmi Hakala Free entry.
Emmi Hakala (singing, piano, guitar) performs simple, genuine, and text-driven pop music that touches with shades of joy and sorrow. The music of the young singer-songwriter is born out of the need to transform the surrounding world into words and melodies. Her bright and clear voice creates an interesting base for this new arrival.
