Poetry walk: Concrete brutalism in Merihaka
Join us on a poetry walk in the concrete neighbourhood of Merihaka! On the walk, we will be accompanied by researcher Juha Vuorinen and poet Joel Mäkipuro. The walking tour is held in Finnish. Free entry.
On the walk, we will learn about the history and unique architecture of Merihaka and listen to poems that fit the urban themes. The construction of the maritime residential area of Merihaka started in the early 1970s. The area is characterised by a dense urban ideal where pedestrian routes and children’s playgrounds are on top of the concrete deck, while cars and parking are hidden below the deck.
Joel Mäkipuro (born in 1991) is a poet from Helsinki. He has studied literature and aesthetics in the University of Helsinki. Juha Vuorinen is a researcher at the Helsinki City Museum. The walking tour will be in Finnish. No advance registration required.
The event is a part of the ‘Places & Hoods – See Helsinki Anew’ exhibition programme. The event is organised in cooperation with the Poetry Moon Literary Festival.
