Read Hour
Welcome to the City Museum to honour reading on Thursday 8 September in celebration of the national Read Hour event and the International Literacy Day!
In Grandma’s House in Children’s Town, the museum grandma and reading grandmas read the ‘Tarinoita ratikoista’ (Stories about Trams) children’s book to children and anyone who is interested.
You can journey back in time to a reading class in an elementary school of the past in Children’s Town’s 1930s classroom. In the class, a teacher will lead the pupils in reading the ‘Maamme kirja’ (The Book of Our Country) book by Zachris Topelius out loud.
You can hear excerpts from mental health related graphic novels by Viivi Rantanen, who participated in creating the exhibition, in the ‘Broken – A Shattered Mind’ exhibition on the fourth floor.
At the end of the day, there will be an hour when the whole of Finland will be reading. The museum’s own written materials will be made available in the museum lobby. Naturally, you can take your own book and come and read with others over a cup of coffee!

At 11.00, 12.00 and 13.00 ‘Tarinoita ratikoista’ reading sessions in Grandma’s House in Children’s Town
At 16.00 Reading class led by a schoolmaster in the classroom at Children’s Town
At 17.00 and 18.00 Excerpts from Viivi Rintanen’s graphic novels in the ‘Broken – A Shattered Mind’ exhibition
At 19.00 Reading hour in Finland – join us in the museum lobby!
Read Hour is a campaign organised by the Children and Youth Foundation with the objective of inspiring children and young people to read. Helsinki City Museum is participating in this national event by putting on events.
